Sir Bertram Kaga is a minor noble whose father was knighted for service to the County. He spent his youth adventuring but retired after a close call with death. After a life of adventure, Sir Bertram decided to fund a cooking academy where chefs from around the world could challenge each other.
As chance would have it, his father died during the civil war and Sir Bertram came into a lot of money. For a while, he enjoyed a life of luxury but soon grew bored. He found what he really enjoyed was to discover new tastes and new cooking styles.
Therefore, he again traveled the world: Nyrond, Keoland, the land of the Ice Barbarians, Hepmonaland, and the Baklunish west, he even went to the lands of Iuz to sample some orkish cooking. It is said that he even sampled some delicacies on the elemental plane of water and in Limbo. Whether these last two are true remains a mystery, but the rumors are persistent, and Sir Bertram does not deny them.
Nevertheless, the risks and dangers of travel reminded him of why he quit adventuring in the first place. Of course, such realization only occurred AFTER he somehow managed to escape from four demons by jumping into a 100ft-tall waterfall.
Therefore, upon his return to the County, he decided to settle down for good and to get people to travel to see HIM. Being a cleric of Rudd, he trusted in his own chance and good luck. Calling upon a number of favors he earned during his adventuring days, Sir Bertram managed to obtain, at a discount price, a large warehouse near the fish market in Radigast city. Using funds he acquired in a number of ways, legal, semi-legal, and clearly illegal; he transformed the warehouse into what he calls "the Cuisine Academy.” The place was fitted so it could hold 10 fully staffed kitchens at once.
