Sitting in a comfortable armchair is a woman in her mid-twenties, her hair is as white as snow, just like her dress. She stands with a friendly smile on her face.

“Pholtus brought you to us, and through his divine guidance, you defeated the creatures of evil. For this, I thank you. My name is Aelyn Kestler, heiress of White Keep. I will ask you to excuse the frugality of my hospitality, but prosperity has long since left this hall. Hendrick has prepared a rabbit he caught this morning. Please sit and eat.”

Personal History

Our story begins in 565CY when a young Pholtan Knight, Sir Relen Kestler from Rothberry decided to go hunting in the Aelinvudd. For days he traveled the woods looking for a prey worthy of him but found only rabbits and other small game.

One morning as he woke up, he saw a beautiful doe with a perfect white coat. Sir Relen took this as a sign from Pholtus, he immediately mounted his horse and began to give chase to the doe. He pursued the animal for hours, but fatigue finally overcame him and he fell off his horse exhausted...

He opened his eyes to a beautiful maiden with perfect white hair and a kind smile tending to the large bump on his forehead.

“Pholtus be praised! Who are you? Are you one of his angels?” he asked.

“I am not… I am but a vision of the forest… My name is Baneilit, I looked after you when you fell. You received a severe blow to the head when you fell from your horse…”

“Baneilit… the knight repeated as if the name meant something… Ban Eilit in Flan! THE WHITE DOE! YOU ARE THE WHITE DOE I WAS CHASING!” Sir Relen scrambled to his feet but his strength left him. Baneilit laughed at the knight.

“Yes…I am… and the choice is now yours… you can take me back as a trophy to the acclamation of all your peers, or you may take me as your wife knowing that I will never bear you any sons.”

“Pholtus’ will is powerful and great. By the Blinding Light that brought me to you, I will take you as my wife.” Sir Relen’s heart had already been smitten by the maiden.

Sir Relen invested his fortune to build a keep by the Aelinvudd. He and Baneilit lived happily. They lived frugally, but love, and some luck, filled what they lacked. Their keep, White Keep, for Sir Relen insisted on painting the walls white, was a simple affair.

In the spring of 570CY, Baneilit gave birth to a lovely daughter. They called her Aelyn and she grew strong and kind. When five years later, Baneilit again became with child, she called her husband to her. “Dearest love, I know in my heart that I bear you a son and that was forbidden to me. If the child survives the birth, make sure he doesn’t live through the day or great woe will befall our family.” Sir Relen promised.

Indeed, a strong healthy boy was born, but his mother did not survive the birth. Sir Relen could not bring himself to keep his promise. Instead he wrapped the child in a thick blanket and took him deep into the Aelinvudd.

There he lifted the child to the Heavens. “Father Pholtus who ordained the laws of the world, I remit this child to you.” Sir Relen abandoned his son to the forest and he returned home.

Within a year, Sir Relen’s health declined to the point where he could barely move. Finally in 580CY, after five years of agony, Sir Relen died.

Lady Aelyn had grown into a learned young woman. She had her mother’s beauty and her father’s devotion to Pholtus.

When her father died, a strange curse fell upon her. The curse prevented her from leaving the castle. So she became a recluse, keeping only Hendrick, her one servant; she sent all the others away. Hendrick knows about her curse, but will not say a thing.
